Every year at the start of January, I take some time to reflect and pick a Word For The Year; a word that I can focus on and use to help me stay motivated throughout the year. After much reflection, my Word For The Year in 2023 is flourishing. This concept of human flourishing has been around since the late 90s with the Positive Psychology Movement by Martin Seliegman. But what does it mean to live a flourishing life? How can you actually do it?
What Is Human Flourishing?
Human flourishing is when all aspects of your life are good. This involves numerous areas of life, including happiness and life satisfaction, physical and mental health, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, and close social relationships. When these areas are balanced in harmony with each other, you experience the joy of living a fulfilling life.
How Can You Cultivate A Flourishing Life?
The key to cultivating a flourishing life is to break down each aspect into tangible steps that you can take towards achieving that goal. So how can you do that? By focusing on four core pillars which are Accomplishment, Relationships, Engagement and Stewardship.
Accomplishment refers to building upon your skillset through learning new tasks or mastering existing ones so as to feel confident in your abilities. Relationships involve creating strong connections with those around you so that you can be surrounded by love, understanding and support. Engagement involves contributing meaningfully to society through volunteer work or advocating for causes that are important for you personally. And finally, there’s Stewardship which is about taking care of both your body and the earth; eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, living an eco-friendly lifestyle etc… All these components when combined together create the perfect recipe for living a flourishing life.
